j_xstitchThe main reason we went on a vacation where we did absolutely nothing was because we have had a stressful couple months.  We decided to fix our floors, then decided to try to sell our condo, then we lost a family member much too early.  We were tired.  As much as the lost of this cousin has effected us, I feel very strongly for our Grandma, who has lost too many people too early.  I’ve been working on this cross-stitch for her for the last month. It’s the first fancy cross-stitch I’ve ever finished and it means a lot to me, hopefully it will mean a lot to Grandma too. Although I’m not sure if it’s acceptable to make a memorial cross-stitch for people…

Harrison Hot Springs

Filed under: Beautiful — Emily @ 2:36 pm

Ah… we spent the long weekend doing absolutely nothing.

Well, that’s not entirely true. We drove 2 1/2 hours northwest to Harrison Hot Springs in Canada. We then spent the next 2 1/2 days lounging by the pool for the uncharacteristicly warm and sunny Memorial Day weekend. I was longing for a vacation where I could wear a swimming suit the entire time, who would have thought we’d just have to go north to do it?

It was wonderful. We didn’t have anything planned (and that was lucky, as there isn’t much to do out there in Canada) and we didn’t plan to do anything except read books and relax. That’s pretty much what we did.

I had the most amazing salad at the Limbert Mountain Farm. Oh, it was great. They had about 15 different things from their gardens in the salad: chive flowers, mustard flowers, dill, mint leaves, lettuces, local hazelnuts, sunflower seeds… all topped with a blackberry basil dressing and locally made feta cheese from just down the road. I’m not sure we’ll ever go back to Harrison Hot Springs, but I still wish I’d had about 12 more of those salads… My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Emily Letterpress 05My design class this quarter consists of playing around with old lead type.  I’m in a letterpress class at SVC and absolutely love it. I get there early and have to be swept out of the shop well after class ends, which is unfortunate for Thursday mornings because class is over at 9:30pm and apparently I-5 likes to be under construction late at night…

We have cases and cases full of old typefaces and cabinets full of old ornaments and goofy illustrations. I love looking through all the old lead pieces and feeling the grit on my fingers from the ink and dust left on the type.

So far I have only officially printed my name. I have made little carbon copies of my linoleum blocks and my type layout, but nothing official yet. I can’t wait to see the first finished product next week — which leads me to my  “Oh crap, I’m printing next week” moment tonight. We’ll be on vacation this weekend (for a well deserved weekend of selfish pampering) so I’m left with next week before I print to get everything done. That meant I had to cut my paper tonight, which would have been difficult, seeing as I’d left it sitting on the shelf in the garage. Lucky for me, my husband is wonderful and braved 45 minutes of driving to get the paper to me. He then helped me tear up my paper and documented the cutting. He got a fancy new camera today and couldn’t wait to try it out. It’s pretty cool, I actually notice the difference in quality from our other cameras (he now has about 24 cameras), this one is definitely the best digital we have.

Oh, and the best part about the class is that we all get an original work from each person in the class!  A few books + a journal + some broadsides + I work in a frame shop = cheap, beautiful, original art!

busy May 1, 2009

So I may have had the best intentions of not making lists of things to do and more lists of things I’ve done, but recently we’ve been busy. So busy that I cannot remember what I did yesterday and have no idea what I’m doing tomorrow. I live in the current day, current hour and I may be able to look about 30 minutes in advance.

That being said, I’ve reverted back into list mode. Yesterday I made a numbered list of things that needed to be done and in what order. As I sat down today to cross off the finished projects, I found that one more task had been added by my lovely, supportive husband:

The joke's on him, I was able to cross it off!
